Ranch rail fencing is an affordable way to fence off larger pastures and properties while giving your property an “estate” appearance. It’s great for pets, children, keeping other animals out, and containing horses and other livestock. Most commonly it is built with either a welded wire or horse wire as well. Welded wire and horse wire look the same in general with a 2”x4” pattern. Welded wire is cheaper and works for most applications. If you have large and more aggressive dogs and/or horses, going with a heavier gauge wire such as horse wire is recommended. The horse wire has knots where all the vertical and horizontal cross wires intersect for superior durability. Ranch rail fencing is usually built with 4x4 treated yellow pine #2 square posts or 4” round treated wood posts and 1x6 treated corral boards. To save on cost more, you can also build a welded wire fence with t-posts and some wood posts and cut out the corral boards. We are a preferred fence company in Magnolia and surrounding areas of north Houston such as Montgomery, Tomball, Cypress, Hockley, etc.
Different Styles of Ranch Rail Fence We Offer:
Vinyl Ranch Rail Fence:-
The rails go through punched channel posts with the vinyl version. When adding wire to a ranch rail style fence, it’s done a little differently depending on whether it's with wood posts and rails or with vinyl fencing. With vinyl fencing, you install the posts, install the rails, then attach the wire to the back side of the fence using corrosion-resistant lag screws with a rubber washer head (roofing screws are great for this).
White Vinyl Ranch Rail fence:-
White vinyl is the most common and most affordable in either 3 or 4 rail applications. You can also get black, brown, beige, and other colored vinyl fencing, but those are more costly than white vinyl. Textured vinyl fencing is also available so that it has a more rustic real wood-like appearance but that is even more expensive than just upgrading to a color other than white vinyl.
White vinyl fencing is a great bang for your buck since it can last a lifetime and is generally pretty maintenance-free. Occasionally it may need to be pressure washed to get off dirt and pollen that can build up, but at least you don’t have to replace any warping wood posts or cracked boards or repaint your fence every few years. If a large animal, car, or tree damages the fence, repairs are usually cheap and easy to do as well.
Wood Ranch Rail Fence:-
With wood ranch rail fencing, you can either have the posts be flat with the top of the fence or extend above the fence and be notched. We like it notched and feel it gives an accent to the fence for minimal effort and cost. No matter if it’s a residential fence or commercial fence.
Cedar Split Rail Fence:-
Cedar Split Rail Fence can be a classic option for ranches. A cedar split rail fence is a beautiful addition to any property. It made from naturally rot-resistant wood, so it is an ideal material for a fence. Cedar Split Rail Fence is durable and can withstand the extreme heat and humidity that is common in Houston.

The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said of the inventor of the fence, “The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said 'This is mine,' and found people naïve enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society.”
There are several types of ranch rail fences but ultimately they are similar in design and function. The most common ranch rail fence has 3 or 4 horizontal corral boards while some have crossing boards or "crossbuck style". Most ranch rail fences are 4' tall while some are 4.5' or 5' tall. It's very common to add 2x4 welded wire to keep dogs/pets contained and other animals out.
Ranch rail fences can easily last 20 plus years if in the proper conditions. If the ground is very saturated all the time the posts will rot faster than normal and only last 15-20 years.
